Because of the increased population of the city of Solms and new regulations of the approval authority it was necessary to restore a pumping station pumping all the sewage of the district Oberbiel to the sewage treatment plant.
The company EMU Unterwasserpumpen GmbH was engaged to redesign the pumping station. The fact that the pumping process shouldn’t be interrupted during the conversion was a special challenge. During the planning phase main emphasis was put on operation security and economy.
Due to the good experiences with existing pumping stations sewage pumps with vortex impellers were used.
These pumps with vortex impellers have a large ball passage so that problematic sewage with coarse solids and long-fibrous matter can be pumped without problems. That’s the reason why a screen installed up to now before the pumping station is not necessary anymore. So far, coarse pollutions such as hygienic articles, textiles, paper and stones were removed from the sewage by the screen and transported to the disposal site in regular intervals. Now the new pumps pump the sewage with the solids directly to the sewage treatment plant without problems.
Until now three pumps were necessary to pump the whole sewage quantity to the treatment plant - now the increased requirements can be covered by two pumps only. Each sewage pump is designed for a flow rate of 50 l /sec.
To increase the efficiency the duty of the pumps is controlled by a frequency converter (dependent on the water level) and thus the duty of the pumps is adjusted to the actual amount of sewage by the latest technology.
The pumping station was connected to the modern remote control system already existing on the sewage treatment plant so that supervision and control of the pumping station is possible from the treatment plant.
The pumps transport the sewage through a 900 m long discharge pipe line to the sewage treatment plant. The conversion made great demands on the executing companies which were met to the complete satisfaction of the customer.
